Because of the current situation with oil reserves and global warming, we are all aware of the fact that fossil fuel is going to history books very soon. BMW, like some other car manufacturers, is moving quickly to introduce their form of hybrid vehicles.
As rumor goes, this Bavarian company has in its long term plan to have a plug-in version of every single model it makes or will make. There have already been some prototypes of the plug-in-hybrid 3-series vehicles, and recently BMW has unveiled a plug in hybrid version of the 2016 BMW X5. It appears that BMW will use the “e” badge designation to indicate its hybrid plug-in models.
2016 BMW X5 Exterior
BMW obviously has big sporting ambitions. Their ambitions are shown in the form of their cars. 2016 BMW X5 has a low slung figure when on the road, and with the addition of their wide wheels, this car takes the position of sport SUV. Extra exterior design modifications make 2016 BMW X5 M version.
That version pushes 2016 BMW X5 even further than before from the standard. With M version you get different front bumper and side skirts, LED headlights, Headlight washers, M sport 20 inch rims, side air intakes, LED taillights, dual exhaust and more.
2016 BMW X5 Interior
The 2016 BMW X5 interior is pretty slick looking. We had an opportunity to test drive a version with a full leather equipment. All leather seats with option for two memorized positions, heated and ventilated with dual zone climate control. Internal illumination as well as external for door handles. Head-up display, voice control, internal internet connection, central BMW infotainment smart screen and driving controls are a standard.
This version, we drove, had a sunroof, which is simply beautiful detail on every car we tried. You cannot make mistake with choosing the sun roof option when buying a car. One detail that stands against the plug-in hybrid is a lot smaller space in the back because of the battery. Everything else is more and less the same in every version.
Engine Specs and Horsepower of 2016 BMW X5
The 2016 BMW X5 engine is a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six with 248 horsepower 568 Nm of torque. It goes form 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds and the top speed is 130 mph. There is also a wide range of options for this vehicle, from 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 and a turbo diesel 3.0 liter. Special thing for 2016 is a hybrid version which everyone expected to be a 4.0 liter engine. Actually the plug-in model is made of two parts.
The internal combustion component is a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder and the second one is an electric motor. The 111 horsepower electric engine is assimilated with eight speed automatic transmission. Depended on your will, it can work on its own, or in cooperation with the 241 horsepower turbo four cylinder. Final system output is 309 horsepower. This SUV can go totally on electric drive for about 19 miles before a total stop. Top speed with the electric mode solely is 75 mph.
There is one negative thing about the hybrid version is its weight. But, the manufacturer claims that extra 5,000 pounds of weight do not influence the driving at all. AWD is a standard ant it operates all the time.
Engine has three modes. Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Save Battery. Auto eDrive goes for the most efficient use of the engine, Max eDrive enables the electricity drive only and Save Battery automatically charges the battery while driving and thus saving the battery for a later usage. Those modes are best combined with the already known BMW modes Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro. More info on edmunds
