When it narrows down to power and handling, the 2016 Subaru WRX STI has the right stuff, and the standard AWD is a sure bonus. However, not everything is blissful, as the overall refinement remains an issue worth debating. Highlights include a strong acceleration, extra traction boosted by the all-wheel-drive, superb handling and steering, and plenty of premium safety and equipment options. Its release date is still mysterious but we expect the details to start streaming in anytime from now.
Last year saw a complete redesign of the vehicle, and the STI still comes with similar performance and heaps of power as before, for a reasonable price. The base engine is offered with a CVT system, and ranks among the top performance vehicles in its class.
The all-wheel-drive system, precise steering, and nimble handling all combine to give the WRX STI a fun-to-drive character even when the road gets twisty. However, the interior design and appointments don’t maintain the sophistication ante as much as we’d like. Other cons include lots of wind and road noise, as well as an uncomfortable ride especially for the STI.
But who cares? That will solely depend on what priorities you have on your list. Fortunately for the disappointed lot, the segment offers a plethora of alternatives worth considering. They include Ford Focus ST, Mini Cooper JCW, Golf’s R and GTI. But truth be told, the 2016 Subaru WRX STI remains hard to beat if fun, performance, and confidence ranks atop your list.
