At the $80,000 price point in the luxury car world, you definitely have a good chunk of options to chose from. There’s the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Cadillac CT6, Maserati Ghibli, BMW 7-Series to name a few. Then there’s the 2017 Audi A8. A car that since its first generation release in 1994 set itself apart from its rivals and presented itself as… “The Most Audi – Audi Ever”.
The 2017 Audi A8 is no exception to this reputation. It is as big, refined and luxurious as ever. Audi offers two trim levels for the 2017 A8 L, with a 3.0L supercharged V6 as base and the ever popular and cooler 4.0T Sport which holds a monster 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 outputting a healthy 450 HP. There also used to be an elusive third option that much of the world forgot even existed, and that was the A8L W12 that started at an economical $137,900. The A8L W12 was less powerful than the S8 plus, as well as many of its competitors. The Exclusive (rightfully named) A8L also didn’t really offer any perks on the interior over the standard car, so you can see why Audi pulled the plug on the project.
The 2017 Audi A8L’s exterior styling is exactly as you would expect. People who buy the A8L simply want to hop in their car, go to the market or golf course and come home in the utmost luxury and comfort without people gazing at them. That is all.
Classic, cascading wood. The base version of the 2017 Audi A8 offers four different interior colors and four different wood inlay options, while the 4.0L Sport offers five options for each category. The inside of this luxury cruiser is as close as you can get to a classical modern living room in a car. Audi offers 22-way power adjustable comfort seats in the front (I can’t even think of 22 ways to move a seat off the top of my head…Good on you, Audi.) and rear seats that can massage you and blow cool air on your back. On top of this, the A8L offers four-zone climate control so that every passenger is in their own special happy place. On top of all these lavish features, the 2017 Audi A8 also has self driving features. Active cruise control allows the car to use its many radars and cameras to see the car in front of you, adapt to keep a safe following distance, coast the vehicle and keep you in your lane.
Just because the A8L is subtle in nearly every way that design is concerned, that doesn’t mean the land-yacht Audi is sluggish. 0-60 is a quick affair completed in 4.4 seconds with the 4.0L V8, 5.5 seconds with the 3.0L V6 and a top speed of 130 MPH for both variants of the car which is obviously limited. The car features an 8-speed automatic transmission on both trim level models as well. The intelligent “Quattro” all-wheel-drive system can send 40% of the torque to the front wheels and 60% of the torque to the rear wheels. The system can also transition, and send 60% of the power to the front wheels when needed. Audi does advertise that the 2017 Audi A8 has a high-tech lightweight construction, but the car weighs over 2 tons. 4,400+ pounds. For reference, a full-grown giraffe weighs 2 tons. But I guess you don’t see giraffes going from 0-60 MPH in four seconds.
One place where praise is definitely due, is the driving mode selection. The 2017 Audi A8 can be programmed to fit your needs with aspects such as suspension, throttle response, gear shifts and steering that are totally adjustable. Standard drive modes include auto, dynamic, individual and comfort. Each mode has its own unique setup to completely change how the car behaves on the road; the coolest more being individual, where you can have sport suspension selected and comfort steering or any other combination the car allows. Truly impressive stuff.

To Sum It Up:
The 2017 Audi A8L is Audi’s answer to the other players in the house-on-the-road segment. It holds its own special place here for not sticking out and being gaudy like its competitors, and that’s part of the big sedans charm. Though, the A8L since its release has been regarded as more of a driver’s car than its competitors, and that is evident in the big Audi’s current state.
The car is due for an update later this year. The Audi A8L redesign is on its way, and should be hitting dealerships late 2017 as a 2018 model. Needless to say, we’re all very excited to see what the German’s have come up with for the latest installment in “sophisticated aggression”.
