The Buick Regal, since its 2009 re-release (I guess you could call it that) hasn’t exactly shaken the world. Based directly on the Chevrolet Malibu, the Buick Regal hasn’t really made a strong case for itself in either the performance or luxury sedan market. But the Regal is priced incredibly well for what it offers. You can classify the Buick Regal as a more economical Audi A4 . In the current generation, the 2018 Buick Regal does make a good case for itself. The interior is sharp and comfortable with a good amount of luxurious touches for the occupants.
But the Regal is due for a redesign for 2018, and there will be a wagon version that (hopefully) will hit United States shores. Trust me, it looks a lot better than you’re probably thinking.
To figure out what the 2018 Buick Regal will look like, we can look directly to its Opel cousin, the Insignia. Both the Insignia and Regal pretty much directly share a body with the exception of a couple badges and a grille. Usually I’m not a fan of copy-and-pasting in the car world, but we get lucky this time since now we can see what the new Regal will look like ahead of time.
Buick means business now. The new 2018 Buick Regal looks much more upscale than the outgoing model. Not to mention it looks fantastically sharp in black. The angles are much more sharp, the nose is muscular and the sedan has grown a bit which is a very good thing for what it’s trying to accomplish.
I am a huge fan of the redesign’s roofline as well. It’s much more athletic and appealing. From the rear, it is much more evident that we’re looking at a Buick Regal. The taillight shape looks much like the new LaCrosse’s and has a bit more of an “update” look rather than a “redesign” looks like the front end presents.
The wheels on this example are great. Not only because of how they look, but this bold five-spoke design is almost a Buick staple now and I think that is good for the brand. It is a pretty original wheel design and fits great on new Buick vehicles, as you can see here.
The car has an attractive lower overall profile, and by the image above you can see we’re going to get Brembo brakes on some trim levels.
Now let’s look at the wagon, which is exciting on a different level than the sedan alone.
A lot of Americans are not fans of the whole station wagon thing, and I can understand why (two words: wood paneling). But I do think we are in for a refresher. The 2018 Buick Regal looks very comfortable in a station wagon configuration. Usually cars that adopt the wagon body tend to appear very uncomfortable in their own skin, and just like overweight versions of their sedan counterparts. But that is not the case here. The Regal Wagon (I’d much prefer to call it the Regal Estate. Sounds much more tasteful) looks as practical as it needs to be and still keeps an athletic stance and impressive style. The lines are chiseled and athletic across the whole car, and it looks fit and ready to compete with the Germans.
The current Buick Regal’s interior isn’t much to make a fuss about. However, it is easy to use, functional, and has a great use of leather for what you pay for. It is a comfortable and pleasent place to sit in, but again nothing to write home about.
For interior of the new 2018 Buick Regal, we can again thank the Opel Insignia. The layout is quite simple, with hardly any features related to the outgoing model. Like a lot of new cars coming out, there are far fewer buttons and knobs than the current model.
It is a clean and simple interior, but nothing ground breaking. The infotainment screen does seem a bit small and like it may rely heavily on touch-sensitive controls on the screen itself. This has proven troublesome in other vehicles, where the screen might misread user inputs, not be sensitive enough and above all, take too much focus away from driving.
I do like the interior, and I believe that we’ll be able to see the car itself priced very good. I just hope the infotainment isn’t a let down.
Unsurprisingly, the new Regal will share its chassis with the Chevrolet Malibu. The Regal will utilize GM’s ever popular 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder engine which will produce 250 HP and 260 Lb-Ft of torque. We can also expect GM to scrap the 2.4L four cylinder that is present in the current first trim levels of the Regal. In its place, we can expect a version of of the Malibu’s 1.5L turbo. Also, GM’s new 10-speed automatic transmission should be present in the new Regal.
As far as a Regal GS, there are no plans as of yet. But if the super Regal does come to life, we may expect it to have a beefed-up 2.0L four cylinder turbo with upwards of 300 HP.

Sum It Up:
The new Buick Regal looks fantastic. I do hope that the Insignia is a good template to base our thoughts off of, as the car looks incredibly well dressed. I would love to see the new wagon option available in the US, but won’t be surprised if the market isn’t there. Just before you leave, take a look at our review of the 2017 Buick Regal here.
