2018 Honda CRV: Specs, Hybrid, Redesign and What's New

The Honda CRV has always been a pretty solid choice for people in need of some extra space, good fuel economy and great reliability.

Through out its different generations, the Honda CRV has been a strong staple in the Honda lineup and aged quite well.  There hasn’t been a generation that really was a dud, which is fantastic and enabled the SUV to build its own special reputation.

While the Honda CRV has never been particularly exciting, it is fun to see a refreshing style every couple of years.  The 2018 Honda CRV is just as solid of a choice for the people I mentioned above as it has ever been.

It gets more and more apparent that Honda takes tips from their design team over at their luxury division Acura (here in the United States) with each new model.  The 2018 Honda CRV boasts a whole new design language to fit the new line.

Honda is creating a whole new language for their cars for younger buyers.  The 2018 Honda CRV adopts this new look in a pretty convincing way.

The Exterior-2018 Honda CRV:

2018 Honda CRV

The exterior of the 2018 Honda CRV adopts Honda’s new face they paste on every one of their cars.  It is a sharper, more focused look with harder angles than the previous Honda CRV.

The proportions are a bit smaller, and it looks a lot more like an Acura now.  The front end has small dimples on the outside of the bumper now, and all of the proportions are a bit smaller.

From the side, the 2018 Honda CRV is very appealing.  It is a very sleek design and the passenger cabin sits pretty far back from the tip of the front, which always looks great.

The roof line is is a lot less prominent that what we’ve been used to on the Honda CRV, trading for a more aerodynamic profile that flows nicely.  This is more impressive than it sounds, since the rear end of the car is so high up on SUV’s, you usually need a taller, more bubbly roof line.  The 2018 Honda CRV does a great job of keeping things looking sharp while staying practical.

2018 Honda CRV Rear

From the rear, the 2018 Honda CRV continues its new more athletic style.  The redesigned tail lights are a pretty complex design with sharp edges and bumps, but the rest of the rear is simple so it isn’t over bearing.

This is quite a trade-off from the 2018 Honda Accord.  But the 2018 Honda CRV doesn’t try to be something it isn’t.  Over all, this is a great evolution of a strong seller in Honda’s sturdy line up.

The Interior:

2018 Honda CRV Interior

I really like the interior of the 2018 Honda CRV.  Honda puts their own spin on the tablet screen thing which is a plus, and the whole interior is easy on the eyes.

I’m not crazy about the star fighter-like gauge cluster in an SUV, but that’s a Honda thing now.  Other than that, the interior with the liberal use of wood looks great.

Think of the 2018 Honda CRV as a bigger Civic.  If you look at it like that, it does get a bit more impressive.  It is a simple lay out and works well with each element in the cabin.  The designers really did great, and I’m happy they avoided Acura’s odd dual-screen layout.  It does look cool, but it’s just another complicated system that doesn’t need to be there.

You can seat 5 adults inside the 2018 Honda CRV.  Honda’s new “HondaLink” system makes sure you’re in tune with the latest technology as well, and works great.

In conclusion, the interior is great.  It is a great combo of functionality and style.  The interior is pretty similar to the previous cars, but updated nicely.  Car interiors are getting more and more advanced, and Honda does good keeping up.

I appreciate good design when I see it.  The 2018 Honda CRV may actually get an optional third row seat.  This would help close the gap between the CRV and the larger Pilot.

The Performance-2018 Honda CRV:

As I said, and I can confirm, the 2018 Honda CRV is based on the Civic.  It is now longer and wider than the previous generation as well.

Because it is based on the Civic, we can expect similar engine options.  We can expect base models to have Honda’s 1.5 L turbo to push 174 HP.  The Civic may be using a 6-speed manual soon, but auto will be the only way in the CRV.  Also, there will be emphasis on low-end torque because of the CRV’s weight.

Honda will offer a hybrid option as well.  The 2018 Honda CRV Hybrid will feature two motors to drive it as well.  There is a similar system in the Accord now, that is able to do 49/47 MPG.  The 2018 Honda CRV should be adopting this new technology.
